Four cottages set in breath-taking mountain scenery
These farm cottages are are over 140 years old and form part of a working farm, set between two protected National Parks and about 300 metres from the small village of El Chorro. Just over an hour’s drive from the Costa del Sol and Malaga airport will take you into another world where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. This is where almond trees blossom in January and orange blossom scents the air in springtime. A traditional Sunday destination for Spaniards from Malaga with several good restaurants that cater for them. Prime rock climbing location and also ideal for walking, bird-watching or just relaxing by the pool. You can enjoy water sports like canoeing or swimming and some places on the lakes are a fisherman's dream. If this seems too tame for you then you had better try either paragliding or rock climbing, for which courses are available, so you can enjoy the wild side of Andalucia to the full.

The accommodation
La Almona Chica is part of a working farm. The crops are olives, almonds, carobs, clementines and lemons. Most of the crops are harvested in winter. All the cottages housed either the farm labourers or the railway workers and the Spanish couple who live in the end cottage both work on the farm. La Casita Blanca has 2 twin bedded rooms and a single loft bedroom over the cosy snug, a kitchen and shower room, front and back gardens with views across the olive groves to the National Park and you can often see eagles and vultures overhead. We live on site to provide any information you may require. The swimming pool is shared by the 4 cottages.
Discover Andalucía from El Chorro
La Almona Chica is a good base for discovering Andalucía. It is within easy reach of Málaga, Antequera and Ronda. El Torcal, where science fiction films have been made because of its unique rockf formations and Fuente de Piedra, where flamingoes nest, are even nearer. You can drive in a day to Granada, Córdoba or Seville we can help you with information, directions and where to park. If you prefer to stay overnight, we can make hotel reservations for you. Let us know your intentions and we can help you get the most out of your holiday. Or just relax in the quiet of the countryside, enjoy the nature parks and lakes.
From bird-watching to para-ascending
There is a railway station about 300 metres from the cottages and in fact they were originally built to house the railway workers. Wheat was grown all around here and from the station it was taken north to feed the large cities like Madrid. There is one train to El Chorro leaving Málaga RENFE at 18.50 every day or you can take a train to Álora (about one an hour) and either take the bus (12.30) or a taxi (around £11). El Chorro is the prime climbing region in Spain and also attracts nature lovers in general (hiking, bird watching, mountain biking,...). You can rent mountain bikes in the village at a specialised shop that also organises 'taylor made' excursions into the mountains. Nearby you can practise para-ascending and the Sierra Nevada ski resort is only an hour and a half's drive from here. Or just relax round the pool!

Casa Rural - but not isolated
Home again, Cheshire
Review Submitted: July 30, 2008, Date of stay: July, 2008
The cottages are on the edge of a small village, but one well known for its gorge (by which the village of El Chorro takes its name), for its interest to climbers, and for the Caminito del Rey, a spectacular but now dangerous walkway 100 metres up the ravine wall. The cottages were described on one website as "basic" but that just means they're old farm cottages where the structure is largely original and the furnishings simple. We stayed in Casa Isabel - the door to the kitchen isn't for the tall, but it's got separate kitchen, sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. It had all we required, plus on most days (in late July) a bit of a breeze to make the provided fan unnecessary. Parking right outside the gate with a small area to sit out in sun or shade, and with a nice pool on site.
There's a decent restaurant 5 minutes stroll away (at the Garganta hotel) - we ate there most nights looking out over the embalsa (a reservoir serving the hydro-electric system) and watching for griffon vultures high in the sky.
You could manage without a car (train from Malaga airport into Malaga then another to Alora then a taxi - or there's one train a day from Malaga direct to El Chorro in the evening) but you'd need to like doing nothing much on holiday, or like walking.
The owners live on site and are available with local advice and other help as needed.
